THE blue bar

The last work by Trix and Robert Haussmann.

The Blue Bar is a members-only cocktail bar destined to become an instant classic and a destination for all design lovers.

When asked to design a bar in Foz by Porto, Swiss architects Trix and Robert Haussmann were already in their late eighties and worked on the commission for two years. Acknowledging the omnipresent blue and white Azulejo tiles which they reinterpreted as an illusion, they called their bar a Portuguese Dream.

Drawing inspiration from Porto and the Atlantic Ocean as well as the legacy of sailors and explorers and the spirit of adventure and discovery, The Blue Bar continues the architects’ longstanding subversion of historical design ideals, from 16th-century mannerism to 20th-century Modernism.

Trix Haussmann has remained involved in every aspect of The Blue Bar’s  construction throughout the project’s development.

About

Trix & Robert

Haussmann

Trix (born 1933) and Robert Haussmann (1931–2021) may be counted among the most important Swiss architects of the second half of the twentieth century. Their multifaceted work ranges from architecture and product design to furniture and textiles and is characterised by the creative play of function and form. They designed the Zurich Central underground railway station (including the iconic Da Capo Bar), the Passage Galleria in Hamburg, the legendary Weinberg shops (amongst them the Lanvin boutique), the famous Kronenhalle Bar, and many other successful experiments in artistic and handcrafted furniture and interiors.

Since founding their “Allgemeine Entwurfsanstalt” in 1967, they have been pioneers in breaking with the premises of modern canonical orders and concepts, reinterpreting playfully the linguistic dogmas of architecture theories (Manierismo critico).
